In therapy, you sit with a trained therapist and delve into the complexities of your inner life. Through conversation and introspection, you gain insight into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and learn tools to manage your mental health and overall well-being. To learn more about my approach to therapy, click here.(www.therapywithmarie.com/approach) Why do people go to therapy? The reasons to seek out therapy are unique for each person. Whether or not you are dealing with a diagnosed mental health condition, you are welcomed to reach out; everyone, regardless of mental health status, has their reasons for seeking support. The time is truly yours to discuss anything you wish, free from guilt. Ultimately, engaging with a therapist is an opportunity to cultivate the resources essential for long-term wellbeing, such as autonomy, resilience, and self-love. Is there a right time to start therapy? Unless mandated, it is always up to you to decide when you would like to reach out for support. How is therapy different from a conversation with a friend? Speaking to someone who is not a part of your everyday world can be very freeing. One of the goals of therapy is to provide you with the space to explore your truth free from the added pressure of social and familial expectations. At no point in time will you be competing in dialogue with the therapist, nor will you hear things like, "It's going to be okay”, “You will get over it" or about the therapist’s own problems. Your therapist can help you discover new tools that make life easier and may encourage you to explore questions that don't typically come up in everyday conversation, such as: “Could my physiology be contributing to how I feel?” “Do I feel a sense of purpose?” “Am I guarding my environment?” “How safe do I feel?” Will my therapist tell me how to live my life? No. The process of therapy is incredibly collaborative. Rather than telling you what to do, a therapist helps you gain a stronger sense of your own needs and desires, allowing you to arrive at your own answers. I also will not — • Force you to do anything you don't want to do. • Focus on labels or pathologizing your experiences (you are more than a constellation of symptoms or a condition to be fixed). • Pretend that I hold all the power to make you change. I respect your autonomy as a human being. Therapy is not a passive practice and it requires you to show up for yourself. What populations, issues, or challenges do you not work with? I do not work with : • Families, children, and teenagers. • Clients who are currently involved in the legal system (e.g. court-mandated therapy), or where release of clinical records for legal purposes is probable (e.g., long-term disability claims, child custody and access suits). • Clients requiring Crisis Response / 24-Hour Services. This includes clients in need of hospitalization at the time of intake, or who are likely to need inpatient care. I also would not be a good fit if you need a higher level of care such as a: • A Partial Hospitalization Program • An Intensive Outpatient Program Do you provide crisis support? No, I do not provide crisis support. If you need urgent help, please contact local emergency services. Residents of Toronto If in danger, call 911. MARIE SCHOPPEN MA, Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) I'm an integrative practitioner, raised between Ukraine and Toronto, Canada. The poetry of life resonates with me deeply, and this resonance fuels my passion for supporting others. My approach is grounded in genuine kindness and understanding, and it’s shaped by a broad spectrum of influences, ranging from philosophy and science to folklore and nature. I bring a tangible, lived experience to my work with clients, having personally navigated mental health challenges at a young age. My insights into the human experience are rooted in psychology, neuro-relational research, body work, and yogic sciences. I also have a passion for fostering multidimensional well-being through both esoteric and creative practices, such as writing, movement, visual arts, and sound. I recognize the profound impact of integrating varied forms of expression and wisdom, allowing for a richer, more comprehensive exploration of self and consciousness. I believe that while much of life is beyond our control, we possess the internal means to shape our reactions. I’m dedicated to cultivating spaces that encourage the emergence of new perspectives and guide clients through complex situations, always being respectful of the integral role of the body. It is my belief healing requires communal support. Working with diverse, skilled practitioners has deepened my own growth and opened doors to teachings and practices that nurture peace and self-awareness. It’s both a joy and an honor to share these insights, helping clients create a fertile ground for growth and transformation. Learn more about my approach. Somatic integration is a supportive approach crafted to help individuals develop an intimate connection with themselves. It is particularly beneficial for individuals facing everyday stress, anxiety, or relational difficulties. Moreover, somatic integration can provide support to those navigating transitions, changes, or personal and professional growth. Is body inquiry a replacement for therapy? No. While I am a qualified therapist, and body inquiry is a supportive method designed for those seeking psychological growth, it’s not suitable for in-depth psychotherapeutic work or for individuals with a diagnosed mental health condition. The supportive discussions / tools integral to body inquiry are, by nature, different from talk therapy. My psychotherapeutic services are restricted to residents of Ontario, Canada. I support clients in all other areas as a coach. Please contact me (www.therapywithmarie.com/support-faqs)for additional information. What does it mean to be trauma-informed? Trauma-informed support is a way of providing care to individuals who have experienced trauma* without creating further harm. The goal of trauma-informed coaching is to help individuals understand and manage the effects of trauma on their lives, empowering them to move forward in a positive way. This modality is not a replacement for, nor comparable to, psychotherapy. * Trauma: a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. Trauma exists on a continuum. Complex trauma is the result of cumulative and repetitive experiences. Single-incident trauma can include moments such as natural disasters, car accidents, or the death of a loved one. Traumatizing experiences are not always as extreme as domestic violence, abuse, or other frightening circumstances. Emotionally neglectful, disconnected, or inconsistent parenting, as well as frightening caregiver(s), can contribute to developmental trauma characterized by feelings of fear, helplessness, and overwhelm. What is breathwork? Breathwork refers to many different types of breathing exercises or techniques. During breathwork you intentionally change the pattern of your breath for achieve cognitive, mental, and spiritual benefits. Some approaches are systematized while others are more intuitive. I draw from a variety of schools of thought, depending on the client's needs. This modality is especially useful for people living with chronic pain, depression and anxiety, trauma/PTSD, and grief. People also practice breathwork for clarity, creativity, confidence, and self-awareness. What is kundalini yoga? Kundalini yoga is an ancient form of yoga that involves chanting, breathing exercises, and repetitive movements to regulate the nervous system and activate your energy. Research has shown that kundalini kriyas (sets of exercises) can improve cognitive function (incl. attention, memory, and self-perception), promote relaxation, and boost physical wellbeing. It is a phenomenal embodiment practice that also happens to be quite fun! As a white woman settler and a non-Sikh, I humbly acknowledge the privilege that comes with sharing and benefiting from traditional teachings rooted in a culture outside of my own. My deep commitment lies in fostering an equitable and inclusive world, where open dialogue, critical thinking, and compassionate action pave the way for positive change within our communities. PRIVATE HEALTH COACHING The Basics The Process Fees & Policies The First Session What is your food philosophy? I encourage people to take care of themselves by enjoying food that nourishes them without becoming fixated on it. I don't believe that we have to earn our food through exercise, perform for our health, or need to weigh ourselves to measure well-being. Taking care of ourselves can feel sincere, loving, and peaceful. While I love whole, unprocessed, locally sourced, and organic food, and hold beliefs about how these foods impact the world, I also understand that these options are not available to everyone. In my recommendations, I always take into consideration my clients' budgets, preferences, accessibility, and location. My approach — • Keep foods that make you feel good in your body, eliminate ingredients that don't • Whole, natural, single-ingredient foods with an emphasis on leaves and veggies • Ease with whatever the real life situation calls for Learn more about my methodology here.(www.therapywithmarie.com/approach) What is holistic nutrition / who is an RHN? Holistic nutrition is a wellness modality that emphasizes the role of education and prevention in health care. Instead of looking at the client as a set of symptoms, a holistic nutritionist aims to understand the client's entire constellation of needs including their unique biopsychosocial makeup and goals. Nutrition is an underutilized intervention in the health care system. By contrast in most traditional medical models, food plays an integral part in health and even common foods are used for medical purposes. Registered Holistic Nutritionists (RHN) are professionals trained in natural nutrition and complementary therapies whose principal function is to educate clients about the benefits and health impact of optimal nutrition on long-term wellbeing. My role as an RHN is to help you make best possible food choices for your unique needs. What conditions can holistic nutrition help with? Rather than working on each symptom separately, holistic nutrition focuses on supporting the body as a whole. This allows practitioners to address several issues simultaneously. Common issues that can be improved on with proper nutrition are low energy and fatigue, insomnia, blood sugar imbalance, stress, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, mood disorders, thyroid conditions, food allergies and sensitivities, weakened immune systems, arthritis, skin conditions, memory loss, auto-immune diseases, reproductive conditions, and digestive issues such as chronic constipation or diarrhea, acid reflux, bloating, gall stones, fatty liver disease. Please remember that practitioners of holistic nutrition do not treat any one condition but help you address the underlying factors that may be exacerbating all symptoms. The focus of my practice is — General Wellbeing Mental + Hormonal Health Burnout, Stress Management Sexual Wellbeing (incl. PMS, fertility, pregnancy, post-natal, loss) Renewal, Regeneration Psychedelic Integration To learn more about my approach, click here.(www.therapywithmarie.com/approach) Who will benefit the most from working with you? The clients that will benefit most from my approach are those who are looking for an alternative way to be with food that fosters nourishment and agency. They view food preparation as a powerful ritual to be infused with devotion, fun, and experimentation. The modalities used in these sessions are not suitable for anyone looking for a quick fix or a 'hands-off' experience where the practitioner does all the work. Correcting nutritional imbalances, adopting lifestyle changes, and expanding somatic literacy takes time and most of the work is done between sessions. Instead of promising you miracles, my approach focuses on education and collaboration, setting you up for long-term success. Learn more about my approach here.(www.therapywithmarie.com/approach) I take medication. Can I still use food to feel better? Yes, absolutely. I take care to ensure that all suggestions work in tandem with your overall health plan, taking into consideration counter-indications and side-effects. How does food impact the mind-body relationship? Here are some everyday experiences of the mind-body relationship in action — • Fluctuations in blood sugar levels leading to crankiness and brain fog. • Lack of sleep leading to difficulty concentrating and impaired cognitive functioning slowing down our tissue repair functions. • Chronic stress or expending energy beyond your biochemical limits leading to anxiety and depression. In each of these cases, specific foods, herbs, and eating habits can offer support, energizing or grounding, depending on what the day calls for. Food is entangled with our well-being. Our bodies crave salt, sugar, dairy and other fast-burning energy sources because those foods release a flood of feel-good chemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine, that regulate our nervous systems and restore cortisol levels. This leads to changes in our mood and lived experience. Nourishing ourselves with care and compassion is a wonderful way of honouring the bond between the mind and body.

  • My Approach | Therapy with Marie

APPROACH I'm here to help you — be honest and present with yourself, overcome challenges, playfully explore the intricacies of your relationships and wellbeing, navigate and resolve the knotty threads of past experiences, and cultivate perspectives that propel you forward at a pace that suits your natural rhythm. As a practitioner, I — create a safe space for you to show up sincerely, just as you are. am accepting, compassionate, and non-judgmental. actively encourage collaboration and choice. acknowledge and use challenging moments for growth. Scroll down to find more about my approach BOOK A SESSION My eclectic methodology involves modalities that explore how your thoughts, emotions, sensations, actions, and energy interact in your unique experience, influencing your wellbeing. I incorporate somatic work into psychotherapy and coaching, combining it with an client-centered, relational, mindfulness-acceptance-based, and post-modern approach to promote a sense of wholeness and contentment. I work collaboratively, tailoring my offerings to your needs, fostering a strong client-practitioner relationship to make room for safety, growth, and transformative self-intimacy. My work is also trauma-informed. I believe there is immense power in attention, acceptance, and open awareness. As Viktor Frankl put it, "Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." My psychotherapy and coaching practice is dedicated to cultivating honesty and presence through all levels of your being, including the body, so that you can take better care of yourself. As you invest time in self-exploration, you will strengthen your resilience and self-compassion, empowering you to navigate challenging experiences without disconnecting from your vitality. The tools I provide guide your exploration of self with curiosity, empathy, and kindness. Some reconnect you with sensations and emotions, while others address thought and energy, offering new perceptions of yourself and the world. I warmly invite your authentic, imperfect human nature to our sessions, where there's ample space for quirks, humor, and more. My approach acknowledges the myriad factors shaping your identity, including the impact of systemic influences. In our equal partnership, I honor your expertise in your own experiences, striving to foster growth within complex systems. Typically, my work with clients is long-term. Trauma-Informed Trauma can have a lasting and persistent impact on the nervous system, whether resulting from a single event or as a consequence of repeated experiences, such as witnessing or experiencing neglect, violence, poverty, discrimination, war, and more. It can affect your sense of safety and well-being in both significant and subtle ways. The wide-ranging, non-verbal effects of trauma can often go unnoticed for years, manifesting as feelings of numbness or disassociation, a desire to avoid people or activities, impulsive behavior, explosive feelings of shame or anger, unexplained physical ailments, and more. I ground my offerings in trauma-informed principles. Some of the tools that I offer are pathways into the nervous system, drawn from trauma-informed modalities that focus on restoring the brain and body to a state of safety and wholeness. These may involve working with breath, movement, self-touch, visualization or guided meditation. Relational We are built for co-regulation. The interaction of two nervous systems is one of the distinctions between working with a practitioner and simply reading a self-help book. Central to my approach is the establishing of mutual trust, creating a secure container where you can feel seen, heard, validated, understood, and supported. In our relational work, we may focus on nurturing interpersonal skills, exploring attachment styles, and fostering the your capacity to establish boundaries, show self-compassion, and embrace intimacy with yourself and others. Mindfulness-Acceptance "Attention is the beginning of devotion.” — Mary Oliver Softly look at your thoughts, emotions, sensations as they emerge. Watch them rise and pass, without judgement, rejection, or fear. Receive this moment of presence and kindness, planting the seed of acceptance and friendliness towards yourself. Rest in your being. My approach involves methods that foster mindful self-awareness, as well as the experiences of non-duality and non-attachment. Meditative practices strengthen brain regions that enhance your ability to communicate, connect with others, and pursue your goals. Acceptance and awareness also enable us to hold multiple perspectives at once, which is helpful for working with existential and cognitive conflicts. I will guide you in navigating challenging thoughts, emotions, and sensations as you cultivate self-compassion and open to your experience. Post-Modern, Feminist Postmodern and feminist approaches help us critically analyze societal influences on our self-perception. I encourage a collaborative and equal client-practitioner partnership, emphasizing your strengths, innate self-knowing, and autonomy. Learn more about psychotherapy / body inquiry / health coaching THE KEEPERS OF EXPERIENCE "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite" ~ William Blake THOUGHT EMOTION SENSATION The Mind: Understanding Your Story Within each of us lies an experiential biography that guides our mind and body to respond habitually. These internal roadmaps can merge timelines, bringing the past into our present. Your day may be full of cyclical encounters with enduring meaning and beliefs, rigid social norms, repetitive emotional responses, and ancient coping strategies. You may find yourself lost amidst all of the noise — feeling disconnected from your spontaneity, genuine joy, and close bonds. My approach involves deepening your understanding of your current situation with the help of your body. Beyond discussing these patterns, my aim is to facilitate an experiential encounter with change. I assist you in capturing the feelings, not just the stories. Mindful self-awareness enhances your presence in your life. By slowing down in session, you connect with concealed emotions, sensations, and thoughts, recognizing and addressing entrenched patterns. Such coherence enables you to differentiate what's within you from what's outside of you, making you attuned to your inner and outer origins. Rooted in your essence, you can forge deeply meaningful connections with others. The Body: Feeling Your Being Life is a sensual practice, and your experiences are shaped by your consciousness as it interacts with the world through your body. The human body offers both strength and insight. As Joan Didion aptly stated, 'The body is the instrument of our existence in the world, the medium through which we make our connections and fulfill our responsibilities, and the locus of our greatest satisfactions and deepest dissatisfactions.' Trying to do with our minds what the body was designed for is the quickest road to burnout. Neglecting the body in favor of the mind, especially when dealing with challenging emotions like anger, shame, guilt, and more, entangles the mind in complex coping patterns that create a false sense of safety that promotes physical / emotional exhaustion. Often, we numb ourselves unconsciously when faced with overwhelming circumstances. My approach seeks to demystify the felt sense and emotions. Together, we explore, express, and regulate emotion and sensations, using the valuable information to guide your actions. This includes recognizing "bottom-up" felt experiences to help you feel safer, calmer, and more regulated in your nervous system. The Spirit: Presence in Matter Questions of meaning and values, philosophical and spiritual dimensions of experience are welcome in session. Exploring our being is most helpful when paired with gentle, grounded awareness of the self beyond the mind and body. This allows you to engage with your thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed. Tuning into this level of awareness has a restorative effect on the nervous system and opens doors to the deeper feelings of compassion, safety, and pleasure, as well as creative forces that invigorate our lives. These are key ingredients in reparative work that supports recovery from stress and trauma. Certain practices help us develop a posture of non-attachment. My approach incorporates these into client work to support your multidimensional wellbeing. Nourishing the Whole Self: An Integrative Approach to Wellbeing When we prioritize our thoughts over our senses, we may unintentionally disregard essential hunger and sleep cues, suppress gut feelings, and push ourselves beyond our limits, making it harder to feel grounded and well. My integrative, somatic therapy approach empowers you to befriend your body and your being so you can engage with life more fully. By tending to your body’s needs, you can experience a deeper sense of peace, connection, pleasure, and relaxation. Learn more. You and THERAPY WITH MARIE further agree that: The arbitrator will utilize desk, phone, or video conference proceedings where appropriate and permitted to mitigate costs of travel.
